10 of the Most Colorful Chicken Breeds

If you are looking for the most multi-colored and colorful chicken breeds, you come to the right place. These chickens are not only beautiful but also adorable.

According to several sources, there are more than 500 chicken breeds around the world and some are disappearing while new breeds are being added each year. There are more than a hundred extinct breeds while there are also new breeds developed by both broiler and layer companies and gamecock breeders.

Breeds of chicken come and go but heritage breeds are here to stay so in this article we are going to show you our 10 favorites to make up this list of the most beautiful multi-colored chickens.

There are many types of plumage. There are just plain ones like Black Australorp, Buff Orpington, White Leghorn, and other single-colored breeds but beauty is obvious when there are one or more colors combined.

Without further adieu, here are our top 10 most beautiful and colorful chicken breeds

1. Wyandottes

Regardless of their color, Wyandottes are the epitome of beauty when talking about colorful chicken plumage. Both the gold-laced and silver-laced Wyandottes are really attractive while the blue-laced red is on another level. Wyandottes are very rare in the Philippines and if you can find one, you may probably see a mixed-raced with a slightly different color from what we have in the photo below.colorful chicken

2. Barnevelders

Sometimes it’s hard to identify Barnevelders from Wyandottes because their colors look almost the same but the former is bigger than the latter.  Barnevelders are also available in gold-laced, blue-laced red, and silver laced, but they are not as popular as Wyandottes in the US. Only a few farmers raise Barnevelders compared to Wyandottes.colorful chicken

Not known to many, purebred Brahmas are available only in three colors which are light, buff, and dark. If someone offers you a Brahma-looking chicken with a different color from what we mentioned here then it’s not a purebred chicken.brahma chicken

In 1922–23, steps were taken to fix a standard after the birds began to show a good deal of uniformity. The eggs were originally exported for the commercial egg trade. Some stock was exported to the United Kingdom, and the breed was added to the British Standard in 1930.
