Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman said Friday that the groundbreaking of the new slaughterhouse facility at the Valencia Satellite Public Market will help bolster the meat industry in Ormoc City, Leyte.
According to Pangandaman, the construction of the slaughterhouse will ensure that Ormocanons receive high-quality meat products.
“With the construction of the new slaughterhouse, we hope to revitalize the meat industry in Ormoc and ensure the quality of meat coming from Ormoc,” Pangandaman said.
According to Pangandaman, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. prioritizes the agriculture sector due to its enormous impact on food security.
It was only during the Marcos administration that agriculture was included in the country’s priority expenditures.
I didn’t see agriculture support in the priority expenditures. However, when nagsimula ang administration, nilagay po natin ‘yung support sa agriculture sa ating priorities (before, agriculture support wasn’t a priority expenditure). However, we included agriculture support as one of our priorities under this administration,” Pangandaman said.
We all know that our beloved President has prioritized the agriculture sector. Whenever I have gone to different provinces, I have observed that the Philippines has plenty of agricultural land, and I hope we can use it effectively to get a high yield.
Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez thanked Pangandaman for approving the new slaughterhouse project, recalling the city’s difficulty securing funds for its projects.
I have met many Secretaries who say ‘No, cannot be (or) no budget yet,'” Torres-Gomez said. “But in the world of many ‘nos,’ thank you, Sec. Mina, for being a ‘yes’ and making this happen for us.”
In the 2023 National Budget, the Marcos administration prioritizes an Eight-Point Socioeconomic Agenda that includes food security under the Medium-Term Fiscal Framework of the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028.
The administration has approved a PHP20 million budget for the slaughterhouse facility under the Local Government Support Fund.
A technologically advanced meat-processing hub will be built in Ormoc City.
Upon completion, it will comply with national and international regulations.
The facility’s construction is a significant step in the community’s development, and it is part of the national government’s ongoing commitment to socio-economic development.
It is a testament to Ormoc’s resiliency following the extensive damage caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.
